How is child support calculated in Australia?
Child support in Australia is calculated by Services Australia using a formula based on both parents' incomes, the number and ages of the children, and how much time each parent spends caring for them. Parents can also make their own agreement. Here's how it works.
What the formula looks at
Both parents' taxable incomes (less a self-support amount), the number of children and their ages, and each parent's percentage of care. Higher care generally reduces the amount you pay.
Private agreements
Parents can agree on child support privately through a limited or binding child support agreement, rather than using the formula assessment. Binding agreements usually require legal advice.
