What are my rights under Australian Consumer Law?
Under the Australian Consumer Law, products and services you buy come with automatic consumer guarantees — they must be of acceptable quality, match their description, and be fit for purpose. If they're not, you may be entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. Here's how it works.
Consumer guarantees
Goods must be of acceptable quality, safe, durable, match their description or sample, and be fit for any purpose you made known. Services must be provided with due care and skill. These rights apply on top of — and can't be removed by — any store policy or warranty.
Repair, replace or refund
For a minor problem, the business can choose to repair it. For a major failure, you can choose a refund or replacement, and you may also claim compensation for consequential loss. "No refunds" signs don't override these rights.
If the business won't help
You can escalate to Consumer Affairs Victoria, and disputes can go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Keep your receipt and records of the fault.
